Production Notes
Coma, Period. was shot in the course of three days over at Ringleader Stages. Since it was shot on greenscreen, many of the “behind the scenes” were actually “in-the-scenes” as you can see from all our magical behind-the-scenes photos over at flickr.com.
As film production professionals, we can truly say that nothing is more fun than working on a set full of magicians, comedians, puppet candy bars, freestanding doors, muay thai fighters, and naked women.
The entire series was conceived on writer/director Rick Castañeda’s commute to work one day, as he was trying to think of a web series that wouldn’t require a set, or many characters, was easily producible, and yet wouldn’t restrict his creativity. “The answer of knocking my main character over the head and putting him in a coma really gave me a lot of ideas of what I could do with this,” says Castañeda. “This coma is really like a sandbox where anything can happen.”
Lead Balloon loved this mix of frugal budget and infinite possibility, and began production on the series in early February, 2008. This same formula carried through to post, where the fact that everything was shot greenscreen was a total bonus. “There were certain times in editing where we really wished that we had more coverage,” says Castañeda. “Then we realized we could either just steal that coverage from another episode, or make it completely from scratch.”
All post, visual FX, and animation were done in-house. As part of the Psychic Bunny family, Lead Balloon has access to all of the Bunny’s expertise in compositing, FX, and hand-drawn/3D animation. “We totally leverage our assets and experience here at Psychic Bunny to make everything at Lead Balloon look really professional and sharp,” says producer Asa Shumskas-Tait. “Psychic Bunny exists not just to make our clients’ projects look great, but our own, too!”
