“A hybrid Director for today’s FX filled movies and television shows” Jeffrey G. Varga has functioned in almost every capacity of the Hollywood motion picture and television industry over the last 23 years working on almost every stage in town. It's hard to put Jeff into a box. Creator seems to be the best term that encompasses his broad range of motion picture expertise; although when pressed he will tell you that he's a Director with a heavy background in visual effects. Jeff is one of those unique individuals that is equally insightful alone in the editing room as he is directing talent and crew.
He's a deeply sensitive visionary that has a knack for connecting with actors to draw out their best performances and at the same time he's able to flawlessly set up complex visual effects sequences so that they composite easily in. He is 100% "actor's Director" and 100% a camera/lighting/VFX Director.
Mr. Varga began his career after attending film school in the early 80’s landing a position as a Production Coordinator at Charlie Band's highly lucrative Empire Pictures. There he learned the art of making low budget productions look like millions more. Continuing on from serving Jim Cameron on The Abyss, he shares in the achievement of an Academy Award for outstanding special effects designs in the creation of Terminator II, having staffed the artists and supervising much of the nuclear blast and hot steel pour sequences. In 2004-2007 he created visual effects for I Robot, Blade 3, Spiderman II, Pink Panther, Fantastic Four and Live Free or Die Hard among numerous others.
In the 90s, juggling multiple career objectives, Mr. Varga became a reputable creative force behind the filming of commercial products, motion pictures and television productions. He has worked with ABC, CBS, NBC, WB, CAROLCO, Sony, MGM, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and Universal among many others and has worked on TV shows including Star Trek Enterprise, Gilmore Girls, Malcolm In The Middle and Drew Carey's Green Screen Show.
Mr. Varga also spent a number of years as a marketing advisor to independent producers and distributors, cutting movie trailers and designing movie posters. One of his proudest achievements was originating the Scream movie key art concept. His long-term clients have included Joel Coler former Head of Marketing for 20th Century Fox and Michael Baumohl former V.P. Int'l Marketing at Warner Bros. and Lucusfilm's European division. Together, he helped launch a new theatrical distribution company, AMPG, serving as its Creative Director for movie releases such as Dinner Rush. Many of the movies he has produced and directed have been released into the home video market and have consistently generated revenues triple of the investments, usually within 6 months of release.
Having an intuition for what audience crave, he developed and produced several TV pilots such as Spy Girl whose characters and styles became popular years later through similar series such as James Cameron's Dark Angel and Alias.
Just before creating Dead End City, Jeff directed 3 national and international spots including a Smirnoff, Electrolux and AT&T commercial.

Behind The Scenes #1

Behind The Scenes #3

Patrick Francis recently completed a feature documentary on the maverick film director, Andre deToth. Andre deToth: The Director's Director probes the connection between deToth's wild life (his escape from Nazi-occupied Poland, the devastating collapse of his marriage to Veronica Lake, his resilience after breaking his neck three times) and his extraordinary cinematic achievements (A-pictures, B-pictures, noirs, westerns, war films, and the 3-D classic, House of Wax). A collaborative effort shot over the last years of deToth's life, the film is an intimate portrayal and highly personal exploration of a man who truly lived life on his own terms. Directors Quentin Tarantino, Nicolas Roeg, Richard Donner, and Bertrand Tavernier also pay tribute to this largely underappreciated artist.
For the video-based website, Interviewing Hollywood, Mr. Francis has produced and edited over 30 hours of content, and conducted in-depth, career-focused Q&A's with Crispin Glover, Elliott Gould, Peter Bogdanovich, and many others. He's also written several screenplays for hire (which hopefully will never be produced) as well as film-related journalism for such publications as L.A. Weekly and MovieMaker Magazine, among others.
It should be noted that Mr. Francis is obsessed with the cinema of Werner Herzog, is an L.A. native, and is the proud owner of a barrel of single malt Scotch whiskey, which is aging quietly in the briny sea air of southern Scotland.
